We woke up at 2am to hike Mount Batur, an active volcano. Mount Batur is classified as a caldera, with its collapsed top. Its most recent eruption was in 2000. The hike began in pitch black darkness. We followed along in the footsteps of our 19 year old guide, the only one of us with a headlamp. As we gained elevation, the wind whipped at us. There was plenty of time to chat on the hike, so Dave tried to learn Balinese words from the guide like "hati hati" or "be careful." Mountain MonkeysWe reached the top lookout before the sun peaked out. There was a makeshift camp set up with ripped blue tarps. A chef cooked eggs by using the steam that generated by the volcano. While we explored the grounds, we spotted some mountain monkeys and Dave quickly made friends with them. Next stop: Nusa Lembongan |
